Creativity in Artwork and Human Systems

Creativity is not only producing artwork; it is the act of creating anything new.  Since I am both a therapist and an artist, I see creativity in artwork and in the human realm. I am a strong advocate of creativity.

In artwork, the act of creativity is attempting to express to the observer, the essence of what the artist perceived.  That requires creating new ways to communicate.  This becomes a creative act of direct communication.

I believe the world needs creativity more right now than ever before.  We need to discover how to create systems that naturally bring out the best in humans, easily provide safety for animals, and allow us to be happy.  How to accomplish this is an intense argument currently.

So, more creativity of new systems is needed, not less.  I was delighted to read in a Psychology Today article, “Putting Yourself in Perspective,” a comment by Rachel Hyman, a manager at Google: “The creativity of executing code, however, is different from generating ideas for magical and new things.  That is why there is now a push for STEAM, not just STEM- for the arts to be added back into education…There’s beauty in the how, but you always need someone to dream, to see new possibilities, or else you turn out the same kinds of things over and over again.” Google allows its software engineers to create anything they want every Friday.  Over 50% of Google’s products have been created on Fridays.

Including artwork in the school system where art classes teach solid technique, then encourages the student to use it creatively assists that creative part of the brain to become complex and mature allowing creativity to express itself in other areas, as well.

When we apply creativity to human systems, the more we set up a system where people naturally tend to access their higher natures,  we will get better results.  You cannot force people to have your value system or legislate morality.  It doesn’t work.

A useful example of setting things up on a system that pulls for the best in human nature is Amazon.  They do millions of interactions, yet only a small group of people try to cheat and sell shoddy products.  Why?  Partially, because they have an immediate feedback system from the buyer who rates the seller poorly if they have been cheated.  However, the overall system gives the message, “We believe you are honest and sell great products.”  So, more people are honest and provide good service.

When we apply creativity and beauty to human systems, we begin with the premise that we can access the best in human nature.  We create a system that pulls for that.  Because we are actively seek the best in human nature, it draws it to the surface.

Now, more than ever, find beauty in other humans, as well as nature. Being creative and focusing on beauty will make you happier

Warmly,
